New Believer Steps

Now In: :Home/New Believer Steps

Have just have confessed a belief in Jesus Christ as your own personal LORD and Savior? If so, congratulations new brother or sister in Christ! You are now a new person, born (again) of the Spirit and  saved by Christ from the judgement to come to have eternal life with Christ in the new Garden of Eden in the new heavens and new earth He will be creating!

Perhaps you accepted Christ at your local church, or while listening to the radio in the car, or maybe at a big convention, concert or stadium revival. Maybe they gave you a “welcome packet” or a “starter bible” and sent you on your way…and now you are wondering, great, what do I do now? I don’t “feel” any different? What do I do next?

After I became a believer, I traveled way way off the narrow road to Christ in the years thereafter, and I never knew why. Yes, I was saved, but didn’t feel any different. I didn’t get any warm fuzzy feeling-all-over when I confessed Christ. I didn’t see a vision, or bright lights, or angels, or speaking in tongues, or heaven, etc.. I didn’t really feel anything. It was just a conscious decision.

I was a baby Christian; I still didn’t know anything or any better. My life was a pretty big mess (see my testimony) subsequently also, it actually got much worse after I believed in Christ. That’s not His fault, it’s mine. It is a very dangerous world and it is a long and dangerous journey that the Christian travels, with many traps, snares, false teachings, false prophets, wolves in sheep’s clothing and other fatal lures.

We are told by Christ:

“Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves; so be shrewd as serpents and innocent as doves.” – Matthew 10:16

Looking back, I didn’t do the very basic things that any/all Christians should be doing. I didn’t know any better. Perhaps others tried to tell me and I just didn’t listen or hear, but whatever the reason, it has helped me learn from it (Romans 8:28-29).

I list what worked (and didn’t work) for me as I traveled along in my own Christian faith in the hopes that others may avoid the pitfalls I didn’t. Each link goes to a new page with information on that step. Take the steps as you get to them; none of us are perfect even after we are saved. I have tried to list them in the order I think it best to do in case you care to follow that suggestion. Some items are quite simple (changing your radio habits); some can be unbelievably difficult (e.g. Finding a Church).

Below are some helpful verses to keep in mind, and memorize. You will soon have your own favorite set of verses memorized also 😉 Each of the verses below are listed for very specific reasons. They each remind key points of a Christian’s daily life: read the word, pray constantly, give thanks, do not love the world, trust God, submit to God.

“If the world hates you, you know that it has hated Me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, because of this the world hates you.” – John 15:18-19

“Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves; so be shrewd as serpents and innocent as doves.” – Matthew 10:16

“Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.” – 1 John 4:1

“Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.” – 1 John 2:15

“These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world.” – John 16:33

“Come out of her (Babylon), my people, so that you will not participate in her sins and receive of her plagues.” – Revelation 18:4 (my parenthesis)

Genesis: 1:1,8

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth...Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness."

Romans 5:12

Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned.

Romans 3:23

All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

Romans 6:23

Isaiah 9:6-7

For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace, On the throne of David and over his kingdom, To establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness From then on and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will accomplish this.

Luke 2:10-11

But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people; for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.

John 3:16-20

“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him. He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. This is the judgment, that the Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light, for their deeds were evil. For everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light for fear that his deeds will be exposed."

John 14:6

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me."

John 11:25-26

Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me will live even if he dies, and everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this?”

Matthew 3:2

“Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”

Romans 10:9

If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.

Revelation 22:10-11

And he said to me, “Do not seal up the words of the prophecy of this book, for the time is near. Let the one who does wrong, still do wrong; and the one who is filthy, still be filthy; and let the one who is righteous, still practice righteousness; and the one who is holy, still keep himself holy.”

Revelation 21:11-15

Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat upon it, from whose presence earth and heaven fled away, and no place was found for them. And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and books were opened; and another book was opened, which is the book of life; and the dead were judged from the things which were written in the books, according to their deeds. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead which were in them; and they were judged, every one of them according to their deeds. Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

Revelation 22:12-13

“Behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to render to every man according to what he has done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.”
